Day 2: THE GREAT COLORADO RIVER
Today’s shortish hike (about 5 miles) was from Hermits Creek to Monument Valley and Granite Rapids Campground on the Colorado River.
We woke up around 6am, ate breakfast (Adventure Meal Eggs & Bacon), and broke camp by about 8:30am.
The first mile was quite a push as it was a steady ascent from Hermits Creek headed to Monument. The hike then flattened out for a bit and offered amazing views of the Colorado River.
Monument Valley was A fairly steep descent ending with incredible views of Monument.
A short mile and a half along a creek bed trail took us to our campground and the Great Colorado River by noon. The Colorado River has an amazing beauty all its own! But wow... it’s freakin cold!!
We spent the rest of the day playing in/around the river (I did a backflip polar plunge into the 50 degree water!
We also got a surprise as a group of rafters came through and ran the Hermit Rapids!
After spending two days in the canyon, I am gaining a better understanding of the canyon’s sheer grandeur and enormity. It’s not called “The Grand Canyon”for nothing!
Tomorrow is our long hike (12-13miles). Hopefully my pack feels a little bit lighter!
