Video games, cell phones, cars, and televisions are just a few examples of technological advances contributing to the sitting epidemic plaguing the modern world. The average American spends 10-13 hours per day sitting, contributing to the unsettling statistic that 3.2 million deaths a year are related to physical inactivity.7 A Harvard study found that 100 million Americans live with chronic pain related to sitting, with treatments and productivity loss costing around $635 billion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that in the United States, 7.6 million people list back pain as their reason for filing disability claims.17 In addition, the CDC claims "worker illness and injury costs United States employers $225.8 billion annually." Apollo Hospitals found that sitting for six hours a day is equal to smoking more than a pack of cigarettes.

The sitting disease is the state of physical, mental, or emotional pain that results from being sedentary. Symptoms include neck and back pain, depression, obesity, and heart disease, and it may even lead to cancer. Fortunately, much can be done to reduce, eliminate, and reverse the plethora of health problems that the modern sitting epidemic has created in today's society.

This book is dedicated to providing readers with a better understanding of the effects of sitting on the body, and more importantly, providing specific strategies to combat, prevent, and reverse the myriad of problems associated with sitting. Additionally, readers will attain a better understanding of the many ways to improve their overall health and well-being.

Q & A

Question: Why did you decide to write “All This Sitting is Killing You”?

Answer: Well I first attended a conference about all the negativities surrounding living in our modern society.  One of the presentations was about all the sitting we do and poor posture we have.  Then I read an article title “Sitting Is the New Smoking”…. Again emphasizing all the problems sitting does to our body.  So I started doing my own research, and my book was born.

Question: Do you plan on writing more books?

Answer:  My first thought after completing my first book was “no way do I want to go through that again….that was a lot of work”.  It took me four years from start to publication.  “Four years in the making” as I like to fondly say.  However, I now realize that many of the issues of the first book were learning mistakes/learning curve issues, and now I am much better prepared to write another book.  In fact, I already have a title selected “Your Complete Guide To A Healthy Spine”

Question: What makes you such an expert on the problems related to sitting?

Answer:  Well first of all I did a tremendous amount of research on the topic and how if affects the body (and mind as well).  Also, I have been a practicing physical therapist since 2003 and have seen so many spine problems, hip problems, and even shoulder problems that can be directly attributed to the effects of chronic sitting. Understanding the cause of these problems and more importantly, finding a solution to these problems has definitely made me an authority on the topic.

I own a Pilates studio and am always on the lookout for great reference books for my students and instructors. Dr. Anderson did a great job in explaining and illustrating common complaints I hear from students often. How do I improve my posture and balance?

Why do I have back and neck pain? What are the best exercises for these chronic conditions most often caused by too much sitting?

He addressed these questions and more In a very simplified way to read and follow instructions to have less pain and enjoy life again through healthy movement. Kudos to him for taking the time and effort to share his years of experience and expertise in a very hands on style of book.

This is an excellent book that includes data, diagrams and a how to for improving our postural issues causing pain and helath problemd. There is information on the data of optimal alignment of our sitting, the medical consequences and the orthopedic and spine consequences of improper sitting. Ideally we are not sitting at all. As we transition to a workforce working from home it is necessary to optimize her ergonomics and still to limit our sitting time for optimal health.

Dr. Anderson does a fantastic job of giving exercises as well as optimizing her ergonomics in the workplace, at the desk, at home while watching TV, lifting as well as at the gym.
